The takiw\u0101 of Te R\u016bnanga o \u014craka-Aparima centres\u00a0around<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u014craka<\/span>,<\/span> Colac Bay, and Riverton-<\/span>A<\/i><\/span>parima and extends from Waimatuku to Tawhititarere. The extensive area of contrasting environment encompasses the lakes and mountains from Whakatipu-Waitai to Taiwhititarere, coastal and inland areas from Waimatuku to Piopiotahi-Milford Sound, Tawhitiarere inland through all of Western Southland, parts of Central Southland,and shares the investment in the landscape with other Murihiku R\u016bnanga and those located from Waihemo southwards.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For generations, it was home to several k\u0101ika at Aparima, \u014craka, Kawhakaputaputa, Pahia, Tunoa, Te Tua and so on, as well as in various inland settlements around the Southern Lakes including Manapouri, Te Anau and beyond \u2014 many historic sites have been recorded along the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Multi-hap\u016b based, the same as it is today, Te R\u016bnanga o \u014craka-Aparima has strong ties to and throughout the main streams of southern whakapapa-Waitaha, Ng\u0101ti M\u0101moe and Ng\u0101i Tahu. Both Aparima and \u014craka hold powerful spiritual attachment for our people, and consequently, many of our R\u016bnaka developments have been grounded in these two places.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our administration building, offices, storage and whare taonga, three kaum\u0101tua units and a residential property, as well as the Tauraka Waka with its resource building and commercial property, are all located in Aparima. Just 11km away from Aparima, you will find our beautiful marae complex, Takutai O Te T<\/span>\u012b<\/span>t<\/span>\u012b<\/span>\u00a0and T\u012bmata, a highly productive plant nursery, several seaside hectares for stock grazing, and Oko\u016bra, a developing whenua matata (coastal wetland area).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Takutai O Te T\u012bt\u012b Marae<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Takutai O Te\u00a0<\/span>T\u012bt\u012b\u00a0means the seacoast or coastline of the T\u012bt\u012b, the name celebrates our T\u012bt\u012b (mutton-birds) returning each year to our shores. Their arrival heralds the coming T\u012bt\u012b season. Shortly after the marae complex was given its name research identified that Foreshore Road, which runs along the front of the marae, was once called “Takutai Terrace”! When the opportunity arose in 1993 to lease a space for our\u00a0<\/span>r\u016bnaka\u00a0<\/span>to have a marae for \u014craka-Aparima in our rohe it was just a one-room, open-plan school. Since purchasing the whenua for our\u00a0<\/span>r\u016bnaka\u00a0three years later, we have been as a wh\u0101nau working towards making improvements and creating our wh\u0101nau space for all generations and future generations to come, to have a marae to come back to. We are fortunate as a r\u016bnaka to manage Te K\u014dawa T\u016broa o Takitimu Lodge in the Valley of Te Anau, on behalf of Te Waiau Mahika Kai Trust. The picturesque setting for the lodge, below the Takitimu Mountains, is rich with history \u2014 making it a retreat experience like no other. This self-contained lodge is available for hire and can have up to 25 people with 10 bunk rooms, an open plan lounge, kitchen and ablutions, kaum\u0101tua flats and walkways to enjoy the whenua. There is no internet, making Te Koawa the perfect place to unplug and enjoy some of the best Te Anau has to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n
